About This Spot

Stepping into Mt Royal Tavern is like slipping into a familiar story told in low lighting and worn wooden stools. Nestled quietly on W Mt Royal Ave, this bar hums with a steady, unpretentious pulse of the neighborhood’s character—a place where time flows a little slower, inviting you to settle in without hurry. It’s not flashy, nor polished, but that’s where its charm lies: in the comfortable, lived-in feeling that despite the years, this spot remains a haven for locals and newcomers alike.

The mood here is unfiltered and welcoming, a true dive bar ethos shaped by decades of regulars who come to unwind. You won’t find a sprawling menu or fancy cocktails front and center, but the drinks make their own quiet statement—affordable, strong, and unapologetically straightforward. Whether you’re nursing a classic Bulleit bourbon or savoring a simple rum and coke, the focus is on connection rather than complexity.

Walls adorned with eclectic artwork hint at stories and personalities that have passed through this door, while bartenders navigate the space with an easy camaraderie that encourages strangers to become part of the laid-back scene. There’s a palpable sense that this is a spot to embrace whatever your mood is: whether you’re in to chat quietly over a stiff drink or simply settle down with familiar faces after a long day.

Food takes a humble backseat here, but the freedom to bring your own snacks or order in keeps the focus squarely on the human moments shared around the bar. Mt Royal Tavern doesn’t try to be everything to everyone; it simply knows what it is—a cornerstone of casual comfort where the small, genuine details build up into something quietly unforgettable.

Mount Royal Tavern is the epitome of a dive bar. 90% of its patrons are long-standing locals who have been coming there regularly for years to unwind their day with a drink or three. Always like a family environment. Always welcoming newcomers. The only food served is something very close to chips and pretzels but you're free to bring your own or get something delivered. Drinks are cheap. I mean CHEAP, but not diluted, with very generous servings. When it's warm, they often throw the grill on in the back and you never know if someone is serving fish that they just caught or just some hot dogs with a few others who've chipped in to do a potluck. This establishment has been around for decades. If you've ever seen Cheers, Mount Royal Tavern is definitely the Baltimore equivalent, but better.

It's an interesting place with interesting artwork on the walls. It's nothing fancy, it's a pub. Sometimes, it smells funny The bartenders are awesome and the drinks are strong and inexpensive. That's all that matters. I'll be back again and again and again...

Update- they now accept plastic. No dive anymore. Update- I wrote the original review 6 yrs ago. Nothing other than the owners and employees has changed. Yes! What makes a bar a "dive"? First it has to be around for a long long time. MRT yes. Second it can never have it's own website. MRT yes. Third no credit debit cards ever. Cash only. MRT yes. Fourth is cheap and strong drinks available. MRT yes. Never ever been redecorated. It has to look the same as is did 20 30 40 years ago. MRT yes. Optionally shoud be dark inside. MRT yes. Yes the MRT is a dive. May it never change.

No food here, but you can bring your own. If you visit Baltimore this should be the place you stop!! Amazing food, music was great, and everything was cheap. Love, Love, Love this place.
